A Ryanair engine fails in mid-air A holiday flight from Thessaloniki to Germany became an emergency on 10 July, when one of the Boeing 737’s two engines failed soon after take-off. The engine broke apart — what experts call an uncontained failure — and damaged a cabin window. The sudden loss of cabin pressure nearly pulled a passenger outside. The crew declared an emergency and landed the aircraft safely, and everyone on board survived. The frightening incident is a reminder of how quickly a normal flight can change, and why cabin windows and pressure systems matter so much.
WestJet cabin crew strike over pay Thousands of Canadian travellers had their plans upset in early August, when flight attendants at WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, went on strike. About 4,400 crew members stopped work in a dispute over pay — especially pay for the jobs they do on the ground before take-off, such as safety checks and helping passengers to their seats. The airline had not paid staff for those hours. The strike cancelled 309 flights, but both sides reached a deal within two days and services soon returned to normal.
United leaves the middle seat empty United Airlines has revealed a new cabin design that will never sell the middle seat. On its incoming Airbus A321XLR jets, the middle place in an Economy Plus row is replaced by a fixed shared table, giving the two other passengers more room. Leaving a seat permanently empty lowers the load factor — the share of seats an airline fills — yet United says the design lets it protect its revenue by selling comfort instead of squeezing in more people. It is a new answer to the most disliked seat on the plane.
GE flies a hybrid-electric plane high GE Aerospace has flown a hybrid-electric aircraft above 30,000 feet for the first time — an important step towards greener airliners. The test aircraft is a modified Saab 340B, a small twin-turboprop, with one of its two engines replaced by a powerful hybrid-electric motor. After the high-altitude flight, the aircraft even crossed the Atlantic in hybrid-electric mode to reach the Farnborough Airshow in England. Height has long been a hard barrier for electrified flight, so reaching normal cruising altitude shows the technology is slowly moving closer to everyday use.
FAA orders new radio altimeters The FAA has told US airlines to replace about 58,500 radio altimeters by 2030. These instruments measure exactly how high an aircraft is above the ground and help pilots land safely in fog, heavy rain or darkness. The problem is that some older units can be disturbed by nearby 5G phone signals. The order — a form of airworthiness directive, a legally binding instruction to fix a safety problem — gives airlines until the end of the decade to fit newer equipment that resists this interference.
Loganair plans an electric fleet The Scottish airline Loganair wants to become the first in Europe to fly a whole fleet of electric aircraft. It has agreed to buy five ALIA CX300 planes from the US company BETA Technologies. Instead of jet fuel, each plane uses batteries and an electric motor that turns a propeller, so its flights are zero-emission. The small aircraft carries up to five people and can fly about 336 nautical miles (620 km) on one charge. Loganair’s short island and city routes in Scotland are a good match for this clean, quiet technology.
