Audio answer: ‘Turbulence on takeoff’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A 747 taxied onto the runway and lined up. A 777 had just departed moments before. Shortly after, the controller gave the 747 clearance to takeoff and the plane started its takeoff roll. With the plane close to V1 it veered sharply left, then right. The pilots immediately applied the brakes and brought the plane to a stop. The plane taxied off the runway and stopped completely. It had 12 flat tyres. Investigators determined that turbulence from the 777 had caused the plane to move dangerously left and right on the runway.

Sick pilots

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

Close to its destination, a small regional jet encountered severe turbulence as it descended through FL100. The aircraft was difficult to control and the crew even had difficultly reading their instruments. To make matters worse, the pilots began to feel sick as the plane descended through the turbulence. As the plane descended to 2,000ft the co-pilot vomited . The captain, starting to feel that he might vomit too, had to break off their approach and go around. They diverted and made an attempt to land at another airport. Once again in turbulence and on approach, the co-pilot became ill, vomited and was unable to fulfil his duties. This time however, the captain was able to land safely and they taxied to the apron as quickly as possible

Injury on board

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A Boeing 767, was enroute from Beijing (China) to Tokyo (Japan). It was cruising at FL380. The captain had turned off the fasten seat belt sign. The cabin crew were serving food and passengers were moving around when suddenly there was unexpected, severe turbulence. One passenger, who was leaving the toilet, was thrown into the air and landed heavily on his ankle. During this fall he sprained his ankle. He was given painkillers by a doctor on board and returned to his seat for the rest of the flight. The crew descended to avoid the turbulence and continued to their destination for a safe landing about 2 hours later.
