Structure: ‘ing’ forms & gerunds

Fly High English - Structure

This time in our structure help we talk about ‘ing’ forms. ‘Ing’ forms can be used in different situations and that’s why they can be difficult to understand. They can be used as progressive forms, nouns and adjectives. Today we want to focus on the noun forms, they’re also called gerunds. Because they’re nouns, these ‘ing’ forms can be the subject or objet in your sentence. You can use them in sentences where other nouns are possible, providing the sentence makes sense. Look at some of the extra examples below the diagram.

Watch out for the building text

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A 747 was outbound and taxiing to the holding point of the runway. It was night and very dark, and unfortunately the 747’s pilots missed the turn to the holding point. They continued straight ahead instead of turning right and ended up on a general aviation taxiway. Continuing with the taxi, the right wing hit an office building and cut through part of the upper section of the building. Some people in the building were injured, but none seriously, while nobody in the aircraft was injured. The building and aircraft both received substantial damage.

Airbus’ Paris Air Show answers

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

  1. They expected around 200 orders and commitments and received over 400 (421).
  2. He says that they had such good sales because the market is still very positive and that airlines are taking the opportunity with low fuel prices to invest in the future.
  3. He has three; the first is the order for 20 A330 regional planes from Saudi Airlines. The second highlight is that they are now about 4,000 net orders for the neo family. The third is the A350, which is behind him in the video.
