Structure: ‘phrasal verbs 3’

Fly High English - Structure

This time in our structure help we continue with phrasal verbs. We have some examples of phrasal verbs with ‘in’ and ‘out’. Also we talk about some of the common concepts associated with these particles which can help to give you an idea of the meaning of the phrasal verb without using a dictionary. Of course, if you don’t know what they mean even after reading about the key concepts, check a dictionary!

Video answers: ‘Making the 777 more efficient’

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

Suggested ICAO level for video: 5+

  1. They wanted to improve fuel efficiency by 2%.
  2. They olympic athlete wears very light shoes to improve performance, Boeing took the same approach with the 777, making small individual improvements which added together, helped to achieve their goal.
  3. They removed 15,000 to 20,000 washers to save 117lbs.
  4. They were replaced with the new rubber technology to reduce their weight (in total) by 110lbs.
  5. Originally, they weren’t completely smooth against the flow of air, so that was fixed and helped to improve performance.

Video answers: ‘The Boeing 307’

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

  1. They were hired to care for queasy passengers during turbulent flights.
  2. It was common because planes could only fly as high as the air was breathable, around 9,000ft, and at this altitude there is much more turbulence than at higher altitudes.
  3. Their solution was a pressurised plane.
  4. The cabin pressure regulator was key to the development of the pressurised cabin.
  5. The sudden stop in the production of the 307 was caused by the start of World War 2.
